Hi Joseph - your cartoon is getting to be a Friday MUST! Deer are so awful around here, even "normal" people are starting to hate them...

Thanks Cyndy! I wish more normal people would get upset about the deer problem -- we really need to do something about the overpopulation (not just for gardens -- forest ecosystems are getting out of wack because of it.)

I read an interesting article in Discover magazine that suggests that forest ecosystems may not be as normal as we think they may be.

Especially of note (and I don't think it's available in the online part of the article) "In all the traditional models of unmanaged wilderness, the variable was humans; animals were an afterthought. Take people out, the thinking went, and forests will follow. And since dense forests cannot support many large herbivores, large herbivores could never have been very numerous. ... 'People argue that animals follow succession; they don't influence it, but Oostvaardersplassen shows animals steering the succession.'"

here's another good article on this.

I am very thankful that we do not have deer in my neighborhood. We do have rabbits, but not deer, those stoopid hosta eating machines!

So true! Though the deer roaming our backyard are also quite fond of lily buds and sedum foliage...
