I've never entered Gardening Gone Wild's photo contest before, but I've been wanting to get more serious about my photography, so I thought I should dive in. And,
David Perry is judging
this month's contest and I ADORE David Perry.
So, I started playing around with the macros in a mason jar concept. I didn't have a mason jar, so I tried various glasses, just to see how it works.
A single aloe flower in a juice glass looks kinda cool...
And the effect of a rosemary flower in a shot glass is kind of trippy. I decided to get more complex, and raided the garden for berries:
Which is kinda... meh. Doesn't grab me. Too busy, I think.
So then I got playing with textures, backgrounds, and other things I had in the house. I made a bed of Job's Tear's (
Coix lacryma-jobi) and put a few flowers from my
Pelargonium 'Vancouver Centennial' on it.
I'm like this better. More drama. More contrast. Then I pulled some sprigs from my rosemary bush.
And this, I think is my favorite. And my submission for the contest. I can't wait to see what everyone else enters!

That's great - those tiny flowers are so easily overlooked, but putting them center stage like this really makes the viewer stop and see them. Good luck in the contest. I'm probably not participating in this one, as I can't set up stuff without a lot of assistance.
I definitely like the last two best. It's a toss up which one I like better. The Job's Tears really make the photo.
I once saw a pack of Job's tears for sale in a Taiwan grocery story, but the English label said "Bob's tears." Wish I'd taken a photo of that.
personally I love the fourth one w/the Jacob's Tears. Beautiful boy.
I enjoyed seeing the other photos you took before deciding on your entry. I like the last two photos best--they are both beautiful. Good luck with your entry. It's a winner in my book!
I like how the rosemary spriggs turned out. They're all great shots!
